Senators fall to No. 24 Motlow State, 73-59
 February 9, 2013

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The Walters State Senators hung right with the 24th ranked Motlow State Bucks Friday night for 33 minutes, but the final seven minutes helped the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association first place team escape with a gutty road win.

The Bucks led 51-49 with 7:59 to play, but a 12-1 run put them on the fast track to a 73-59 victory over the Senators inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium.

With the win, Motlow coach Jerry Nichols and his team improve to 17-3 overall and 12-1 in TCCAA play, which keeps them two games clear of Volunteer State in the league standings.

The loss drops Walters State to 11-14 overall and 5-9 in region action.

Motlow never trailed in the contest and there was only one tie in the first half, but the Senators kept it close throughout. The biggest lead for the Bucks in the opening 20 minutes came early on when Sean Gardner hit a layup to make it 13-6 with 14:40 left in the half.

Walters State rebounded and got a pair of buckets from Willie Holloway to trim the margin to 20-19, but back-to-back 3-pointers from D.J. Jones and J.C. Bonny pushed the lead back to 28-21, and they got another long range trey from Bonny in the closing seconds to make it 33-27 at halftime.

Tyler Ailshie helped cut the deficit to 35-33 with a 3-point play early in the second half, but Motlow scored three straight buckets to extend the lead to eight. The Senators trimmed the margin to a single point at 47-46 on a pair of 3-pointers from Darius White, but they got no closer.

The 12-1 run by the Bucks all but closed it out. Walters State never got within striking distance, and Motlow closed the game out at the free throw line.

The Bucks shot 39.4 percent (26 of 66) from the floor in the contest, including just 8 of 26 from long range. Motlow outrebounded the Senators 52-38 as well.

Michael Tomlin placed the Bucks with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Perrin Buford added 14 points and Jones had 12 in the win.

Walters State shot just 30.9 percent (21 of 68) from the floor, and made only 4 of 20 from long distance in the loss. Both teams made 13 of 17 from the free throw line in the game.

White led the Senators with 15 points, while Tony Wilkerson tossed in 13 in the defeat.

The Senators will be back on the hardwood Saturday when they host TCCAA rival Volunteer State inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
