No. 12 Senators edge No. 20 Chipola, 8-7

MARIANNA, Fla. – The 12th ranked Walters State Senators have enjoyed playing in the Chipola JUCO Classic the last few years, and they extended their win streak in the event to five games Friday with an 8-7 win over the 20th ranked host Chipola Indians.
The Senators rapped out 11 hits in the win, with sophomores Colin Bennett, Chris Hipchen and Dustin Woody and freshmen Elijah Sutherland and Jake Farr each recording a pair of hits each in the victory. Farr, Woody and Jared Allen all drove in two runs, with Farr smacking a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning.

Walters State (1-3) got five innings from starting hurler Josh Peterson, who picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the year. The University of Tennessee signee allowed five runs – two earned – on five hits in five innings while fanning five batters and walking three.

Zach Walton notched the save in his first action of the season. The Austin Peay State signee scattered three hits and allowed a pair of earned runs in two innings, but he kept the Indians (6-5) from rallying to tie it in the bottom half of the seventh.

Chipola reliever Taylor Lewis took the loss after giving up four earned runs on four hits in two innings. Michael Mader allowed four runs – one earned – on five hits in four innings as the starter.

Cameron Gibson, Daniel Mars and Josh Barber all had two hits and a pair of RBIs in the loss.

The Senators scored a run in the first inning but trailed 4-1 going to the fourth. A three-base error in the top of the fourth helped WSCC tie it, but Chipola reclaimed the lead in the fifth with a single run to make it 5-4.

The Senators rallied in the top of the sixth, with Woody singling in a run and Farr roping the go-ahead two-run double to put Walters State up 7-5. The Senators added another run in the seventh on an RBI double by Chris Hipchen, and Walton allowed two runs in the seventh by got the final out to secure the win.

The Senators will finish up their trip to Florida with two more games Saturday against Shelton State and Chipola. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
