Senators drop 78-70 decision to Gulf Coast
 November 25, 2012

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – Despite and 18-point performance from Darius White and 16 points and nine rebounds from Elgrin Wilson, the Walters State Senators were unable to get a win in the second day of the Gulf Coast Thanksgiving Classic Saturday.
The Senators, who lost their fifth straight game to drop to 3-6 on the year, could not overcome a poor shooting night and a tough Gulf Coast team that held a 20-point first half lead before watching Walters State chip away late in the game.

Walters State was ice cold in the first half, making only 9 of 32 shots (28.1 percent) from the field, including 1 of 7 from long range. The Commodores countered by making 12 of 28 (42.9 percent) from the field and 6 of 16 from behind the 3-point line.

The Senators shot much better in the second half, knocking down 43.3 percent (13 of 30) of their shots and making 6 of 13 from long distance. White was a catalyst, making a pair of treys as Walters State cut the deficit as low as seven down the stretch.

The Commodores finished the game shooting 42.9 percent (21 of 49) from the field, including 7 of 23 from long range. They also knocked down 29 of 37 free throws in a game marred by 45 foul calls.

The Senators finished the game shooting 35.5 percent (22 of 62) from the field, including 7 of 20 from behind the 3-point line. They also made 19 of 25 from the charity stripe. Fred Yarbrough added nine points in the loss.

Walters State was outrebounded 40-35 in the contest, but they forced 17 turnovers while committing only 13.

The Senators will be back in action Tuesday when they host Milligan College inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
