Senators fall to Pensacola State, 78-64

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The Walters State Senators dropped their fourth straight contest Friday, falling to the Pensacola State Pirates 84-70 in the opening day of the Commodore Thanksgiving Classic at Gulf Coast State College.

The Pirates (5-2) knocked down 13 3-pointers in the contest, which turned out to be the difference. The Senators (3-5) made six shots from long distance, but Pensacola was 61.9 percent from behind the arc.

The Pirates shot 50 percent (12 of 24) in the first half, including a red hot 7 of 9 from 3-point range. They also made 9 of 10 from the free throw line to take a 40-28 lead at halftime.

The Senators shot 40 percent (10 of 25) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including 4 of 11 from long range.

Walters State was unable to make a run in the second half, and the Pirates pushed the lead to 60-44 before coasting to the win.

The Senators were outrebounded 38-33 in the contest, both teams had 15 turnovers and Walters State outscored the Pirates 23-16 off of the miscues. The difference came down to the 3-point shooting, as the Senators shot just 31.6 percent (6 of 19) from behind the arc.

Pensacola shot 43.5 percent (27 of 62) from the field in the contest, and they made 77.3 percent (17 of 22) from the free throw line. Dawuud Salaam led the Pirates with 19 points, while Devin Wilson added 16, Josh Turner had 15 and Qiydar Davis had 14 in the win.

Walters State shot 45.1 percent (23 of 51) from the field in the loss. Leland Robinson paced the Senators with 19 points, while Fred Yarbrough and Elgrin Wilson had 10 points each in the defeat.

The Senators will take on homestanding Gulf Coast State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
