Herkimer Claims Ninth DIII Men's Soccer Title in Double Overtime
 November 11, 2012

It took two overtimes but in the end, Herkimer County Community College (N.Y.) defeated Montgomery College (Md.) 1-0 to successfully defend their DIII men's soccer national championship crown.

Following over 120 minutes of scoreless play, Herkimer County sophomore midfielder Craig McCabe put in the walk-off goal past Mongomery freshman keeper Serigne Baba Gaye. Generals freshman midfielder Michael Pope sent a hard strike off Gaye, leaving the rebound to McCabe who capitalized on his opportunity. The shutout marked Herkimer County's third of the week as the Generals did not allow a single goal at the national tournament.

The Generals flexed their defensive muscles early, cliching a tight 1-0 victory against Brookdale CC (N.J.) in the opening round. In the semifinals, Herkimer County enjoyed their highest offensive output of the tournament in a 3-0 win over Bunker Hill CC (Mass.).

Earning their ninth national title since the creation of Division III in 1994, the Generals have established themselves as the nation's premier DIII men's soccer program. Herkimer County has now won back-to-back national championships three times and imrpoves their record in the championship final to 9-5 in their 14 appearances.
