Sophomores Gaston, Delaney lead VU to 97-77 victory
OLNEY, Ill. – The sixth-ranked Vincennes Trailblazers moved to 3-0 on the season by pulling away from State Fair in the second half Friday night for a 97-77 win in the first game of the Olney Central Rotary Classic.
Sophomores Jerrod Gaston and Deshawn Delaney led the Trailblazers with 20 points each. Gaston’s total was a VU career high and included two of VU’s three treys. Sophomore Darius Carter had 18 and sophomore Tyran de Lattibeaudiere finished with 10.
Freshman Joe Thomasson paced State Fair with 20, while sophomore Jacob Williams had 18 for the Roadrunners.
The game was tight and rather rough early on. Twelve fouls had been called in the initial 10 minutes and VU scratched its way to a 20-14 lead with 9:50 to go in the first half. State Fair's Deron Hill picked up his fourth foul with four seconds to go in the half and VU’s Jeremiah Williams hit one of two at the line for the Trailblazers. Gaston then picked up a loose ball on a Roadrunner turnover and got fouled to go to the line with half a second left. Gaston hit one and VU went to the locker room with a 45-36 advantage. That was VU's third nine-point lead of the half.
After the break, VU scored the first four points of the half and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Gaston helped the Trailblazers stretch the lead to 54-38 with 17:27 showing on the clock. Over the next 10-and-a-half minutes, the lead grew to 20 and expanded to as much as 24 at times as VU pulled away for the win.
The Rotary Classic has had a lineup change for VU’s Saturday game. The Paducah Predators pulled out of the event and a squad known as ABDC Prep has agreed to make a stop in Olney Saturday after playing at Southwestern Illinois. ABDC will play VU but ABDC Prep only agreed to the game if they and the Trailblazers play Saturday's second game. That means VU will tip off Saturday at 9 p.m. (Vincennes time).
