No. 13 Lady Bobcats play for state title on SundayOctober 20, 2012
POPLARVILLE – The 13th-ranked Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats had a battle here Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the MACJC State Soccer Tournament at Pearl River Community College.
But they were able to prevail.
Greene County freshman Kelsey Cochran scored at the 4:02 mark of the second overtime to lift JCJC to a 1-0 victory over Itawamba Community College.
The win moves JCJC into Sunday’s 2 p.m. championship match against Pearl River Community College. PRCC defeated Hinds 5-0 in the other semifinal game.
In men’s action, Holmes scored in the 80th minute to eliminate JCJC, 1-0.
Lady Bobcats 1, Lady Indians 0
The Lady Bobcats held the upper hand for most of the game, but could not put the ball in the goal for over 100 minutes of play.
The two teams were scoreless through regulation and the first 10-minute overtime period.
Cochran, the state’s leading scorer, was then able to score almost midway through the second overtime to win the game in sudden death.
Aundrea Borchardt was in goal for JCJC. The Lady Bobcats outshot Itawamba, 34-3.
The Lady Bobcats, winners of 12 straight, are now 13-0-1 and have posted 10 shutouts, including seven in a row.
They have beaten Pearl River twice this season, 3-2 and 2-0.
The winner of Sunday’s JCJC vs. Pearl River matchup will play for the Region 23 title vs. Meridian Community College in Meridian at a date and time to be announced.
Itawamba ends its season at 7-7-1.
Bulldogs 1, Bobcats 0
The Bobcats battled valiantly, but could not defeat the North’s top seed.
James Oliver scored the only goal of the game with around 10 minutes left to play.
Alan Davidson was in goal for JCJC.
The Bobcats end the season at 5-8-1.
Holmes, 12-3-1 overall, meets the winner of Saturday night’s Pearl River vs. East Central matchup at 4:30 p.m. Sunday for the state championship.
