JEFFERSON'S WILEY NAMED NJCAA REGION III ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR
 October 8, 2009

Jeffrey L. Wiley, Watertown, of Jefferson Community College was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III Athletic Director of the Year. Wiley received the award at the bi-annual NJCAA Region III business meeting held in Ellicottville (NY) on September 22, 2009. Wiley was selected by a committee of his Region III athletic director peers. Region III is comprised of 26 colleges and divided into the Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC), in which Jefferson competes, the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference and the Western Athletic Conference. Wiley has served as Jefferson's director of athletics since 2000. He has also taught physical education at the College and coached the women's basketball, golf and softball teams.

Mick McDaniel, of the NJCAA Region III board of directors, cited professionalism, performance of Jefferson teams both on and off the field and involvement with Region III as factors that were taken into consideration during the voting process. Wiley lends his time and expertise to Region III as the assistant women's director on the NJCAA Region III board of directors.

Under Wiley's leadership, Jefferson athletics enjoyed a tremendously successful 2008-2009 year. Seven of ten teams went on to post-season play with the women's soccer team winning the NJCAA Region III Division III championship, the men's basketball team winning the MSAC Championship and the golf team winning its MSAC Championship. Thirty student athletes were named to the MSAC all-conference team and fourteen were named NJCAA All Region. Three players were designated NJCAA All-Americans. Additionally, six coaches were recognized by the MSAC as coach of the year in their respective sports and two were also named NJCAA Region III coach of the year.

Wiley is a graduate of Jefferson Community College and also holds a bachelor of science degree in physical education from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland. In 1994, he earned a master of science degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy.

"We congratulate Jeff on receiving this distinguished honor; such recognition by his colleagues certainly reflects his commitment to excellence," says Betsy D. Penrose, vice president for students at Jefferson. "Jefferson Community College has a long-standing tradition of dedicated students, coaches and professionals within the athletic department. We are particularly proud of Jeff's ability to advance the athletic programs for our students."
