TCC Eagles earn No. 3 preseason ranking from Sporting News

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (October 6, 2009) - Tallahassee Community College's men's basketball team has received a No. 3 preseason ranking from the Sporting News, whose 2009-10 College Basketball Yearbook hit newsstands across the nation on Tuesday.

No. 1 Three Rivers (Mo.) Community College and No. 2 Midland (Texas) College sit atop the preseason rankings, which include the top 25 teams from both the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).

"It's exciting to be ranked (No.3), but it's only preseason," said TCC head coach Eddie Barnes. "We want to be there at the end (of the season), when it matters most."

When asked if the preseason ranking would serve as a motivating factor for his team, Barnes said, "It's nice for the players and our program to receive the recognition. Now, I want the team to go earn it."

TCC is one of three teams from Florida - all from the Panhandle Conference - to earn a spot in the Sporting News' Top 25. The Eagles are joined by No. 17 Chipola College and No. 23 Northwest Florida State College.

The Eagles will open the 2009-10 season on November 5 when they host the Wing Zone Tip-Off Classic.

TCC's James, Waithe earn preseason honors from Sporting News

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (October 6, 2009) - The Sporting News' 2009-10 College Basketball Yearbook hit newsstands across the nation on Tuesday, and a pair of men's basketball standouts at Tallahassee Community College received preseason honors.

Bernard James and Marvell Waithe were named second-team and fourth-team Super Sophomores, respectively, in the Sporting News' JUCO Report.

The Sporting News' JUCO Report includes players and teams from both the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).

James (#21 right), a 6-foot-10 center from Savannah, Ga., and Waithe (#22 right), a 6-foot-9 forward from Toronto, Ontario, combined to average 31.6 points and 17.4 rebounds as freshmen.

In Panhandle Conference play, James averaged 15.4 points and 11.2 rebounds while Waithe posted 17.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Following the season, both players were named first-team Coaches' All-PC and are the only 2009 first-teamers who will suit up in the PC in 2009-10.

Earlier this month, James and Waithe were named to Basketball Times' Sweet Sixteen, a list of the top 16 junior college sophomores nationwide.

The Eagles will open the 2009-10 season on November 5 when they host the Wing Zone Tip-Off Classic.
