WICHITA, Kan. – In a battle between the last two undefeated teams at the NBC World Series, the NJCAA National Team roughed up the pitching staff of the Hays (Kan.) Larks to pull out a 12-7 victory Wednesday night. The national team pounded out 18 hits en route to their fourth victory of the tournament.
A familiar tone was set early in the contest as the NJCAA squad pushed five runs across in the first two innings. After the Larks cut the lead to 5-3, the team posted four runs in the seventh inning, two in the eighth and one in the ninth to outlast Hays – which has advanced to the finals of the NBC World Series three times since 2000.
All nine players in the starting lineup produced a hit for the NJCAA squad. Irving Lopez (Arizona Western) and Roman Collins (Des Moines Area, Iowa) led the team with three hits apiece. Lopez (right), Collins and Brent Williams (Seward County, Kan.) were the top run producers on Wednesday with three RBIs each.
The NJCAA National Team advances to the round of six at the NBC World Series and is the lone undefeated team remaining in the tournament. The team will face the defending NBC Champion Seattle Studs Thursday, August 7 at 7:30 p.m. (Central).
