Former Weatherford pitcher throws one-hitter at Fenway Park
 July 24, 2014

BOSTON—Former Weatherford College pitcher Jake Arrieta took a no-hitter into the 8th inning for the Chicago Cubs June 30th, shutting out the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Arrieta gave up one hit, one walk and no runs while striking out 10 over 7 2/3 innings. The fans at Fenway Park gave him a loud ovation when he left the game after throwing a career-high 120 pitches.

The month of June was incredible for Arrieta.  In six June starts he posted 39.1 innings pitched, allowing just four earned runs and striking out 48 batters. He won his last four decisions in June, and in the last two, he was perfect through the first five-plus innings.

The right-hander from Plano was traded to the Cubs from the Orioles in July of 2013.  He is 9-3 with a 2.62 ERA in 20 starts in a Cubs uniform.

Arrieta played for Weatherford College in 2005.  He went on to TCU, earning Pitcher of the Year honors in the Mountain West Conference, and he played for Team USA in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  He made his big-league debut with Baltimore in June of 2010. Derek Jeter was the first batter he faced in the major leagues.
