 November 17, 2013

HERKIMER, N.Y. – Herkimer County (N.Y.) hoisted the NJCAA DIII Men’s Soccer National Championship trophy for the third straight year after defeating Suffolk County (N.Y.) 1-0 Sunday at Wehrum Stadium. The victory gave the Generals their 10th title in program history, adding to their previously established NJCAA record.

Herkimer County sophomore defender Peter McAvoy scored the lone goal of the match off an assist from sophomore midfielder James Wilson. Sophomore goalie Triston Henry added five saves to the effort.

Scoring in all three matches and totaling four goals for the week, McAvoy was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Henry was named to the all-tournament team and was joined by Generals sophomore forward Jimmy Calderon (right) and freshman defender Mitchel White.

The top-seeded Generals began their quest in Thursday’s quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over SUNY-Adirondack (N.Y.). Herkimer County followed up Friday with a 2-1 victory over Richland (Texas) in the semifinals.

Herkimer County’s victory in the title game improved their final record to 17-1-0 on the year. The Sharks closed out their 2013 season with the defeat, falling to 18-2-2.
