NORTHFIELD, Mass. – Harper (Ill.) and Ocean County (N.J.) captured the team titles at the 2013 NJCAA Division III Cross Country Championships Saturday, Nov. 9th hosted by Holyoke Community College (Mass.) at the Northfield Mountain Recreation Center.
Over 130 runners from 17 NJCAA member colleges braved the cold and windy conditions in the men's 8k race where Harper won its third consecutive national title. The Hawks raced to the top of the standings thanks to three top 10 individual finishes. Harper tallied 45 team points, which was well in front of national runner-up Ocean County (N.J.) who finished with 84. Rounding out the top five schools were SUNY Delhi (N.Y.), Mohawk Valley (N.Y.) and Howard (Md.).
Brennan Albuck was Harper’s top finisher on the day, placing fourth overall (28:02.6). Zach Stella was fifth (28:07.02) and Juan Barajas was eighth (28:45.63). Howard freshman Gary Smolyak took home the men’s individual crown with a time of 24:48.28.
The women’s 5k featured approximately 100 harriers from 12 colleges. Ocean County (N.J.) emerged as this year’s national champion, finishing with 65 team points. Last year’s national champion, Gloucester County (N.J.), finished second with 75 points. SUNY Delhi (N.Y.), Mohawk Valley (N.Y.) and Fashion Institute of Technology (N.Y.) rounded out the top five.
Elizabeth Kowlaski (20:15.89) of Ocean was the first to cross the finish line in the women’s 5k race. Gloucester's Catherine Dougherty (20:18.28) challenged Kowlaski to the very end and finished second overall. Margaret Weinberger was Ocean’s second-best performer, finishing 11th overall (21:33.44).
