Day 1 in the books from Flushing Meadows; Gloucester out to early lead

Flushing Meadows, N.Y. - Although the weather forecast called for early rain showers, the 2013 NJCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship completed its first day without making any adjustments or changes.  And, as the day concluded at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, there appeared to be very little change atop the team standings following last year’s event. Brian Rowen’s Gloucester (N.J.) Roadrunners, the 2012 team champion, carries a six point cushion over last year’s runner-up Fashion Institute of Technology (N.Y.).  Suffolk (N.Y.), the Region 15 Champion, sits in third place with 14 points.

There was very little drama in singles competition with the exception Grace Wills of Brookdale (N.J.) outlasting Ali Krowiak of Broome (N.Y.), 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4, in first singles quarterfinal play. Miranda Speak of Hagerstown (Md.) and Suffolk’s Amanda Van Nostrand each finished their first round (second and third singles respectively) matches by going three sets. The top seeds all advanced in doubles competition as well.

Action continues Thursday at 9 a.m. with the singles main draw semi-finals followed by the consolation brackets.  The tournament concludes Friday with the final rounds.
