Hutchinson CC vs Air Force Prep Football Game Becomes Casualty of Government Shutdown
 October 4, 2013

From HCC Sports Information

Hutchinson Community College’s scheduled game on Saturday at Air Force Prep has been canceled because of the government shutdown.

Through Thursday morning, plans were in place for the 3-2 Blue Dragons to travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to play Air Force Prep on Saturday. On Thursday afternoon, Randy Stange, HCC Director of Athletics, received a call from Air Force Prep coach, Captain Justin Handley, informing him that the game was canceled because of the shutdown.

On Air Force Prep’s Facebook page, the following was posted:

“ALL: Until further notice, ALL Husky Athletics home AND away games are CANX. This is true even if a third party offers to pay fees, as the issue is one of optics and we must follow suit with guidance given for Falcon athletics, which is that ALL games except for the AF-Navy game this weekend are canceled.

We sincerely apologize for the back and forth but we are getting different guidance every single day regarding execution of the government shutdown.”

Letters were sent to Stange and Jayhawk Conference commissioner Bryce Roderick by Captain Handley on Thursday explaining the situation.

Not knowing when the Government shutdown will end, that leaves no room for a rescheduled contest with Air Force Prep because Hutchinson has no remaining open dates. The Blue Dragons are in the process of trying to find another team to play to complete its schedule.

Currently the Blue Dragons are 3-2 with three scheduled remaining games – Oct. 12: at Independence, Oct. 19: Fort Scott at Gowans Stadium; Oct. 26: at Butler – NJCAA rules stipulate that teams have six victories to be eligible for bowl consideration.

Hutchinson comes off an impressive 36-20 victory last Saturday against Highland to improve its record to 2-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. This loss of the Air Force Prep game will not affect anything within the conference or Region VI Playoff seedings.
