Walters State receives seventh TCCAA All Sports Award
 August 20, 2013

GALLATIN, Tenn. – At the TCCAA meeting last week, Walters State was awarded the All Sports Award for the seventh time, the most of any college in the TCCAA.

The WSCC teams had an NJCAA record setting year with five teams going to the national tournament.

The Senators golf team finished national runner-up, the highest finish ever by a TCCAA school, and coach Bill Gardner was named the Golf Coaches Association of America National Coach of the Year. The trip to the national tournament was the 18th appearance for the WSCC golf program.

The Lady Senators basketball team finished the season 29-2 and made their 10th trip to the NJCAA National Tournament, where they finished ninth in the nation after being ranked as high as sixth in the country during the season.

The Senators basketball team and coach Bill Carlyle made their sixth trip to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchison, Kan., after a late season run through the TCCAA tournament to make the championship game.

The Senators baseball team made their sixth trip to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., and their fifth trip under now retired coach Ken Campbell after winning another TCCAA regular season title.

The Lady Senators softball team and coach Larry Sauceman made their first ever trip to the NJCAA World Series this season after going 39-9 and being ranked nationally for the entire season. The sophomore class that helped lead WSCC to the national tournament finished their two years with a 86-15 record.

All told, Walters State’s athletic teams have now participated in 47 national tournaments at different levels within the National Junior College Athletic Association. The tennis team went to nationals six times in the 1990s.
