Chipola takes care of Lake Land in second round matchup

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Third-seeded Chipola (FL) College pounded out 12 runs and 12 hits en route to a convincing 12-3 triumph in five innings over #6-seed Lake Land (IL) College in the championship bracket of the 2013 NJCAA Division I Women's Softball National Championship tournament Thursday afternoon at the Canyons Complex. Chipola (49-6) will advance to the championship bracket semifinal to face Salt Lake (UT) CC Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. (MDT). Meanwhile Lake Land (44-9) will face Paris (TX) JC in an elimination game Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. (MDT).

The Indians broke open a 1-1 game with five third-inning runs to race out to a 6-1 lead. The Lakers drew a run closer in their half of the frame, but Chipola answered with two tallies in the fourth and four more runs in the decisive fifth to end the game via the eight-run rule.

Indian infielder Mya Anderson drove in four runs on two hits to lead Chipola, while Katherine Harrison and Hayley Parker each had two hits and two RBI. Indian starter Eva Voortman won her second game of the tourney, scattering nine hits and three runs over five innings with four strikeouts.

Melanie Steer picked up two hits and had two RBI to lead Lake Land. Laker hurler Alexandria Smith was roughed up for five runs, three earned, in taking the loss. The Lakers lost despite collecting nine hits, but they stranded seven baserunners for the game.
