Lake Land surprises Iowa Western in first round upset
 May 16, 2013

STEVE JOHNSON, DIXIE STATE UNIVERSITY

ST. GEORGE, Utah – No. 11 seed Lake Land (IL) College was the highest seed to claim victory in the first day of competition as the Ducks claimed a 10-2 victory over #6-seed Iowa Western Community College in the opening round of the 2013 NJCAA Division I Women's Softball National Championship tournament Wednesday night at the Canyons Complex. Lake Land (49-5) will advance to face #3-seed Chipola (FL) College in the championship bracket quarterfinal Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. (MDT). Meanwhile IWCC (41-13) will play #14-seed Odessa (TX) College in an elimination game Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

Lake Land jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the strength of a first-inning, two-run single from Melanie Steer and a two-run home run in the second from Kristi Belshe. IWCC answered with a pair of runs of its own in the second which chased LLC starter Kayla Kirkpatrick from the game. Duck reliever Alexandria Smith righted the ship as she struck out five and held Iowa Western to just one hit over the final 4.1 innings to pick up the win. Lake Land would tack on five insurance runs in the fifth, highlighted by a Belshe grand slam, giving her 6 RBI on the night, to put the game away.

IWCC lead-off hitter Rebekah Sanchez accounted for two of the Reveirs three hits for the game. IWCC starter Ashley Schmidt was touched up for eight runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work.
