ST. GEORGE, Utah – Kylee Studioso fanned a tournament-high 12 and fired a complete-game two-hit shut out to pace #10-seed Weatherford (TX) College to a convincing 8-0 triumph over #7-seed Walters State (TN) Community College in the first round of the 2013 NJCAA Division I Women's Softball National Championship tournament Wednesday night at the Canyons Complex. Weatherford (49-6) will now go on to face #2-seed Salt Lake (UT) CC in the championship bracket quarterfinal Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. (MDT). Meanwhile WSCC (39-8) will play #15-seed Georgia Perimeter College in an elimination game Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Six of Coyotes’ nine hits went for extra bases, including four home runs, one of which was hit by Studioso in the sixth inning. Katy Vandewater connected on a two-run blast in the third frame, while Samantha Algeria added a solo shot in the fifth, and Kortney Korrel barreled a three-run shot for good measure in the seventh.
Andrea Eison and Kaylea Payne accounted for the two lone WSCC safeties, while starter Kelsey Weddle allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits in six innings in a losing effort.
