Salt Lake wins tournament opener against Georgia Perimeter
 May 16, 2013

STEVE JOHNSON, DIXIE STATE UNIVERSITY

ST. GEORGE, Utah – No. 2-seed Salt Lake (UT) Community College pounded out 13 hits and rode a strong pitching performance from MaCauley Flint as the Bruins eased to a 9-1 victory in five innings over #15-seed Georgia Perimeter College in the first round of the 2013 NJCAA Division I Women's Softball National Championship tournament Wednesday night at the Canyons Complex. Salt Lake (49-9) will now go on to face #10-seed Weatherford (TX) College in the championship bracket quarterfinal Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. (MDT). Meanwhile GPC (21-15) will play #7-seed Walters State (TN) CC in an elimination game Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

The Bruins struck for three early runs in the first, highlighted by a two-run single Whitney Holt, to bolt out to a 3-0 lead. After a Jaguar run in the top half of the third, Holt answered with another two-RBI base knock to stake SLCC to a 5-1 advantage. The Bruins then tacked on pair of runs in the fourth on a Maddy Woodard two-run home run, and added two more in the fifth to end the game.

The run support was more than enough for Flint as she scattered one run and two hits over five innings with three strikeouts to pick up the win.

Jaguar hurler Jenna Carr accounted for the GPC’s lone tally as she homered in her only plate appearance in the third, though she was touched up for five runs and eight hits in a losing effort inside the circle.
