Louisburg College (N.C.) defeated Mesa Community College (Ariz.) 75-65 Saturday to win the Division II women’s basketball national championship. The Hurricanes claimed their third national title in school history and first since moving down to DII.
Sophomore guard Justin Taylor led the Hurricanes with 19 points, hitting 8-of-20 shots from the field including three 3-pointers. Taylor was named tournament MVP after averaging 14 points per game in Louisburg’s four games.
Louisburg received 15 points and seven rebounds from sophomore guard Tiffany Johnson, while sophomore forward Latrice Phelps had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Mesa failed to keep the Hurricanes off the charity stripe, giving up 31 free throw attempts to their nine. The Thunderbirds had 18 fouls in the game, while Louisburg was whistled for ten. Turnovers also played a major role in the Hurricanes’ victory. Louisburg lost possession only three times during the game, while Mesa had 18.
Louisburg’s victory in the championship game boosted their final overall record to 32-3 for the season. Mesa’s record dropped to 28-7 to close out their 2012-13 campaign.
