Central Arizona Wins Fifth DI Men's Cross Country National Championship

INA, Ill. – The men’s cross country team from Central Arizona College notched the program’s fifth NJCAA Championship on Saturday in Ina, Ill. Five CAC runners finished in the top 25 to cruise to an easy victory in the final team standings. The Vaqueros tallied just 51 team points to finish first. Spartanburg Methodist College (S.C.) came in second with 105 points and Paradise Valley Community College (Ariz.) finished third with 139 points.
Central Arizona was led by Tod Jackson, crossing the finish line second overall with a time of 26:19.7. Jackson Thomas of CAC finished seventh (26:19.7), Paul Sakit came in 10th (26:36.9), Jose Wells was 15th (26:44.1) and coming in 24th overall was Fermin Villagren (26:55.2).
Stanley Kebenei (bottom photo) of Iowa Central Community College was the individual champion with a time of 25:02.6. Cloud County Community College’s (Kan.) George Gathura finished second overall (25:47.5) and Robert Allen of Community College of Rhode Island came in third (25:54.9).
Central Arizona previously won national championships in Division I men’s cross country in 2005, 2003, 2002 and 1988.
This year’s event was hosted by Rend Lake College (Ill.) and featured 280 harriers from 54 NJCAA member colleges.
