COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Nick Miller (Northeastern JC, Colo.), Derek Neeper (Northeastern JC, Colo.), Greg Carroll (Westchester CC, N.Y.), Matt Faia (Northern Essex CC, Mass.) and Matt Engler (Onondaga CC, N.Y.) have been named NJCAA Baseball Players of the Week for games April 30 – May 6.
Northeastern swept Division I honors with Miller earning Player of the Week and Neeper claiming Pitcher of the Week. The Division II Pitcher of the Week was Carroll. Faia was named Division III Player of the Week, while Engler took Pitcher of the Week for the division.
DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nick Miller; Northeastern Junior College, Colo.
First Base; Loveland, Colo.; Mountain View High School
Miller claimed Division I Player of the Week honors after hitting for the cycle in the Plainsmen’s 8-3 win over Trinidad State JC (Colo.) last week. The sophomore went 5-for-5 in the victory with two hits, a double, a triple and a home run. Miller batted in two runs, scored three of his own and stole a base in the effort. Northeastern and Miller have advanced to the championship series of the Region 9 tournament and will take on No. 12 Lamar CC (Colo.) this weekend in a three-game series.
DIVISION I PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Derek Neeper; Northeastern Junior College, Colo.
Right-Handed Pitcher; Loveland, Colo.; Mountain View High School
Facing Trinidad State JC (Colo.) in their first game of the Region 9 tournament, the Plainsmen turned to Neeper for the crucial win. The sophomore hurler delivered with seven solid innings in an 8-3 victory. Neeper struck out eight batters, giving up two runs on seven hits. Northeastern and Neeper will face-off against No. 12 Lamar CC (Colo.) this weekend in the Region 9 championship series.
DIVISION II PLAYER OF THE WEEK
No players were nominated in Division II.
DIVISION II PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Greg Carroll; Westchester Community College, N.Y.
Right-Handed Pitcher; Croton, N.Y.; Croton-Harmon High School
Carroll put together two clutch performances last week to keep the Vikings alive in the Region 15 tournament. Facing elimination against Ulster CCC (N.Y.), Westchester handed the ball over to Carroll for the start. The freshman responded with a complete-game shutout, allowing only three hits and three walks in the 7-0 victory. In the first game of the championship series, Carroll came in in relief and recorded two perfect innings for the save in a 9-5 win over Sullivan CCC (N.Y.). Carroll and the No. 15 Vikings went on to win the Region 15 tournament and will head to CC of Rhode Island this weekend for the East District tournament.
DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Matt Faia; Northern Essex Community College, Mass.
Second Base; Sandown, N.H.; Timberlane High School
Behind the bat of Faia, the Knights cruised through the Region 21 tournament last week and punched their ticket to the Division III World Series. Faia compiled a .571 (8-for-14) batting average with three doubles and a triple. The sophomore tallied nine RBIs in the tournament, while drawing four walks and stealing two bases on the week. No. 3 Northern Essex and Faia claimed the Region 21/District H championship and will head to Tyler, Texas, for the DIII World Series May 19-25.
DIVISION III PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Matt Engler; Onondaga Community College, N.Y.
Left-Handed Pitcher; Whitesboro, N.Y.; Whitesboro High School
The Lazers entered the Region 3 tournament on a high note after receiving seven perfect innings from Engler in a 1-0 victory over Tompkins Cortland CC (N.Y.). Engler struck out eight batters in the outing and gave up no walks, hits or runs. Following a sweep of Columbia-Greene CC (N.Y.) in the first round of the Region 3 tournament, Engler and the No. 2 Lazers travel to Herkimer CCC (N.Y.) this weekend where four teams will battle for a spot in the Division III World Series.
