Brookdale Baseball Head Coach Johnny Johnson Notches his 500th Career Victory

Lincroft, NJ - The Brookdale baseball team swept Globe Institute 5-4 and 15-1 to give Johnny Johnson his 500th win as part of the program. In the first game, after being up 4-0, Globe tied the game at four in the top of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, a throwing error by the Globe right fielder scored Dean Wilson (Haddon Heights) on a Dave England (Toms River South) hit and gave the Blues the win.
Johnson, who is in his 15th year in charge of the Jersey Blues program, has been named the Region XIX coach of the year five times, and the Garden State Athletic Conference coach of the year six times in his illustrious career at the helm. Johnson’s career record now stands at 500-184.
No stranger to success, Johnson was recently voted to the All-Decade Team (1980) for New Jersey high schools by Scholastic Sports and was previously voted to the first team All Tri-State Daily News team as a catcher in 1980 and 81 before starting his collegiate playing career at Brookdale.
The 2013 Blues (31-12), who will find out their fate as the Region XIX seeding commences this upcoming week, will seek their fifth Region XIX crown and fourth trip to the NJCAA world series as the 2013 Region XIX tournament begins on May 4th.
Brookdale's Hall-of-Fame Softball Coach Bo Scannapieco Reaches Illustrious 900th Win

Lincroft, NJ (April 19th, 2013) – Brookdale Community College softball head coach Bo Scannapieco has one more notch on his belt of softball accolades. After the NJCAA top-ranked Jersey Blues swept Cumberland County College 16-1 and 15-0 this afternoon, Scannapieco earned his 900th career victory.
The 27-year veteran entered the 2013 season as the NJCAA career leader in victories among Division III softball coaches, and after this afternoon’s sweep, his career mark currently sits at 900-249-3 (.781 win percentage). The Jackson native’s impressive resume also includes three National Championships (2002, 2005, 2010), 14 Garden State Athletic Association titles, 15 Region XIX championships and four national runner-up finishes.
Back in 2007, Scannapieco was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame and was recently recognized by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for his 700th win – a feat that was conquered during the 2009 season.
Brookdale Hosts Play 4Kay (Pink Zone) Night

LINCROFT, NJ -- Brookdale Community College hosted its annual Pink Zone – Play 4 Kay night to benefit breast cancer when the men's and women's basketball teams took on GSAC opponent Camden County College on February 5, 2013, in the Robert J. Collins Arena.
The Jersey Blues teams and cheerleaders wore pink t-shirts while Camden donned pink socks. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee was on-hand to pass out t-shirts and distribute informative brochures on breast cancer awareness.
Special thanks to the Jersey Underdogs B-Boy troupe for their half-time performance.

Farrah Smoke Named Brookdale's NAGWS Day Woman of the Year

LINCROFT, NJ - Women's tennis sophomore Farrah Smoke was honored as Brookdale's Woman of the Year at the 21st annual New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) luncheon on Sunday, January 27, at Seton Hall University.
New Jersey governor Chris Christie sent a proclamation officially declaring Sunday National Girls and Women in Sport Day.
Each Garden State Atheltic Conference institution school was given the opportunity to award a "Woman of the Year" based on academic and athletic accomplishments as well as community service and, as such, Smoke joined 16 other student-athletes from community colleges around the state.
"Farrah exemplifies what this award is all about," stated Brookdale director of atheltics, Shawn Noel. "Not only a terrific athlete, Farrah places heavy emphasis to succeed in her studies. Then, at the end of the day, she still has enough time to volunteer through various organizations. She truly does it all, and does it all exceptionally well."
Smoke became Brookdale’s first-ever first-flight singles National champion this year and was named the ITA Scholar-Athlete of the year for the highest GPA of all National tournament competitors for maintaining a 4.0. She was also an NJCAA first-team All-American, the second consecutive year for the honor, having earned All-American in first-flight doubles in 2011.
Dan Davis Leads SAAC in Team Building Workshop

LINCROFT, NJ - On Tuesday, January 29th, members of the student-athlete advisory committee had an opportunity to participate in a specialized team building workshop. The theme was setting the groundwork for leadership and how to keep others engaged and involved.
David Rosado, SAAC co-chair reflected: "It was great to put our trust in one another. Working as a team to complete, what seemed to be an impossible task, was encouraging. We had our eyes open to the strength of teamwork."
Led by Dan Davis, a motivational speaker and trainer who specializes in M.O.O.M.B.A (My Only Obstacle Must Be Attitude) and positive empowerment, the workshop consisted of various problem-solving drills that could only be overcome through teamwork.
“Yesterday was an absolutely amazing experience for our student-athletes,” commented SAAC advisor Katie Miller. “Seeing our student-athletes come together and collectively participate in these team building exercises was awesome. They listened to each other and were able to succeed in accomplishing each task. It is moments like these that truly show the distance the student- athletes are willing to go to succeed.”
