SPC basketball teams slated to begin 2011-12 basketball seasons Nov. 4-5
November 3, 2011
LEVELLAND, Texas – The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan basketball teams are scheduled to tip-off their 2011-12 basketball seasons with a pair of games each over the November 4-5 weekend as the SPC men will be traveling to Odessa, Texas, and the Lady Texans will hit the road Thursday afternoon for Thatcher, Ariz.
Entering his twelfth season with the Texans, head coach Steve Green will be taking a seasoned group to Odessa for matchups with Ranger College on Friday at 3 p.m. and North Lake College at 2 p.m. in the confines of the O.C. Sports Complex at Odessa College. Both games will be streamed live over the Internet for all fans to see by visiting www.spctexans.com.
The Texans are coming off a season in which they won 17 games and lost 13, including a record of 6-8 in league play that was good enough for the fourth seed to advance the Texans to the Region 5 tournament for the eleventh consecutive season.
With eight sophomores and a strong core of freshmen talent, the Texans hope to return to the top of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC), and Region 5. The voters seem to think the Texans can return to the top after voting them to finish second in the WJCAC and giving them a No. 18 NJCAA national ranking.
Top returners for SPC include Greg Gainey, who garnered first team All-WJCAC and Region 5 honors last season, and Derrell Edwards, named to the WJCAC Honorable Mention team. Other sophomore returners include Malcolm Miller, Stanton Kidd, and Deshaunt Walker. A few of the newcomers to watch are sophomore transfer Marshall Henderson and freshman Yanick Moreira, a 6-10 post whose size and athleticism should cause problems for opponents offensively and defensively.
Seventh year Lady Texan head coach Michelle Wyatt is trekking west for showdowns with Eastern Arizona and Mesa Community College. They will play Eastern Arizona at 5:30 p.m. (MST) Friday, November 4 and Mesa CC at 11 a.m. (MST) Saturday, November 5.
The Lady Texans hope to improve upon last season’s record of 19 wins and 9 losses, including an 8-4 record in WJCAC action that saw them tie for second in the conference standings and advance to the Region 5 tournament.
Wyatt’s teams have advanced to the Region 5 championship game in five-of-seven seasons at the helm and will look to returning All-WJCAC first team guard Ashley Roberts to help lead a young team that includes 11 freshmen. Roberts led the 2010-11 Lady Texan squad with an average of 14.9 points per game, playing in 25 games and starting 19. Other sophomore returners include Raely Parada and Avril Matthews.

LEVELLAND, Texas – Freshman sensation Natoya Goule broke the NJCAA national record in the 1,000 meter run – her third NJCAA record of the year – and South Plains College athletes continued their dominance in their final meet before next month’s NJCAA championships by breaking five school records and taking 15 individual titles at the Texas Tech athletic training center.
Goule, a freshman from Jamaica, bolted to the lead in the women’s 1,000 meter run and never looked back as she dominated the field by nearly 11 seconds. Goule’s time of 2 minutes, 44.73 seconds broke the 20 year old record previously held by Inez Turner by 4.47 seconds. Lisa Forsberg (2:55.30) was second in the race in a personal best time.
Sophomore Anton Kokorin came within .09 seconds of breaking a long standing record in the men’s 600 meter dash. Kokorin battled with former Texan Renny Quow over the final 200 meters and held on to defeat Quow with a school record time of 1:17.28.
Only two weeks ago on this track sophomore Isaiah Gill set the school record in the men’s 200 meter dash. Tonight, Gill had teammate Rondell Bartholomew to reckon with and the two crossed neck the line with identical times of 21.03 seconds to become co-record holders in the event.
Niko Williams-Richey toyed with the school record in the men’s 55 meter dash when he finished with a time of 6.37 seconds on January 22. Williams-Richey became the record holder tonight when he topped the previous best time of 6.36 seconds, crossing the line in 6.35 seconds.
Competing in his first heptathlon of the 2011 indoor season, Stormy Smothers two day score of 4,845 points easily bested Jordan Coffman’s 2009 score of 4,625 points. Smothers began competing Thursday with the 55 dash (7.01), long jump (20-10.50), shot put (36-11) and high jump (6-03.25). He finished on Friday morning with the 55 hurdles (8.20), pole vault (12-11), and 1,000 meter run (2:45.77).
Janelle Redhead nearly regained her school record in the women’s 400 meter dash when she defeated a strong field in 53.50 seconds. On January 15, Redhead set the standard in the event with a time of 55.20 seconds which was later broke by Goule’s 53.27 second effort on February 5.
Janeil Bellille and Sparkle McKnight swept the top two spots in the women’s 600 meter run. Bellille crossed the line in 1:33.71, while McKnight finished just behind in 1:34.01.
South Plains College athletes took the top four spots in the men’s 800 meter run, with all finishing in personal best times. Shevaun Marsh (1:54.49) led the way, while Roblet Muhudin (1:54.92), Julian Parker (1:55.14), and Kourt’ney Payne (1:55.38) completed the Texan sweep.
In other running action, Kemoy Campbell (2:28.65) held off his opponents in the men’s 1,000 meter run; Isacc Placencia (4:28.55) won the men’s mile in a season best time; and SPC distance runner Kadian Dunkley (10:49.57) and Jonathan Lira ran away from the field in the women’s and men’s 3,000 meter run.
Jessica Franklin and Keri Emanuel each jumped a season best of 18-10.50 to finish in a tie in the women’s long jump.
In the women’s triple jump, Emanuel again finished second, this time behind teammate Victoria Flemons. Flemons had a season best leap of 40-04.00, while Emanuel’s best jump was 39-01.00. Samantha Cooper (36-07.00) finished third.
Ronson Small dominated a small field in the men’s triple jump with a season best of 49-08.50.
Anthony May is scheduled to compete in the men’s high jump, which has yet to begin. May broke the school record just last week at the Tyson Foods Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas when he cleared 7-00.50.
The Texans and Lady Texans will have two weeks to rest and prepare for the NJCAA national championships held March 4-5 at the Texas Tech athletic training center. South Plains College swept both men’s and women’s team titles the last time they competed at the indoor championships in 2009.

LEVELLAND, Texas – The South Plains College Texans improved to 2-2 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) play with a huge 75-60 win over No. 16 ranked Odessa College Thursday night at the Texan Dome. South Plains is now 13-6 overall.
Four of SPC’s starting five scored in double figures, led by Greg Gainey who scored 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Malcolm Miller dropped in 15 points, while Brandon Thompson and Derrell Edwards added 14 and 12 points, respectively. Stanton Kidd was big off the bench with 11 points.
It looked like the Texans might put the game away early as they found themselves up by ten points, 23-13, with 8:03 to go in the first half of play. The Wranglers pulled as close three points before the Texans took a six point lead to intermission.
Odessa took their first lead of the second half at the 12:49 mark when Kevin Schaffartzik hit a jumper to make it a 41-40 game. Jermonte Bush converted two free throws and then Derrick Barden took advantage of Malcolm Miller turnover to give Odessa 45-40 advantage.
South Plains answered with a 10-0 scoring run that reversed the deficit. Odessa would pull to within two points with 6:50 to go in the game, but that is as close as they would get. Leading 54-52, the Texans went on a scoring rampage that put them ahead by as many as 18 points on their way outscoring their opponents 21-8 over the final minutes to cruise to a 15 point victory. The loss drops Odessa to 17-3 overall and 3-1 within the conference.
The Texans are scheduled to travel to Borger on Monday where they will take on Frank Phillips College at 7:45 p.m. The Plainsmen (11-9, 1-3) notched their first conference victory when they defeated New Mexico Military Institute 78-69 on Thursday evening.
