San Jac baseball team raises $4,210 for Angel Flight South Central

The San Jacinto College baseball team raised $4,210 at the recent Play Pink game, an event that supports Angel Flight South Central and raises breast cancer awareness.

The Play Pink event raised funds through a silent auction and donations. Since 2010, the San Jacinto College baseball team has raised nearly $21,000 for Angel Flight South Central through Play Pink activities. Angel Flight South Central encourages pilots to volunteer their skills to provide free transportation for people in need of critical medical treatment not available to them locally.

For the San Jacinto College baseball team, the cause has a personal connection. Assistant coach Jimmy Durham lost his wife, Michele, to breast cancer 10 years ago. At the time, Durham was on the coaching staff at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico. While Michele was being treated in Houston, the couple used the services of Angel Flight South Central (then Grace Flight of America) to fly Michele and the Durham family to and from New Mexico and Houston free of charge.

The team and coaching staff were touched by the support shown by fans and the community.

“Once again, the Gator community was very gracious in supporting Angel Flight South Central at our Play Pink games in helping us raise more than $4,000,” commented assistant coach DJ Wilson. “It is such a special event to us, as it is a way for the baseball program to give something back to Angel Flight for all they did for Coach Durham and his family. The family members of our players, former San Jac players and families, the faculty and staff here at San Jac from all campuses, were all so generous and gracious with both their monetary donations and the volunteer work for the event.”

San Jacinto College is currently 20-17 overall and 11-13 in conference play. The Region XIV tournament is May 10 through May 14 at Angelina College in Lufkin. The winner of the regional tournament advances to the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series, May 23 through May 31 in Grand Junction, Colo.
