Monroe Mustangs teach youngsters the game

The Monroe College (N.Y.) Mustangs baseball team took time out from preparing for their season to help the New Rochelle Thunder travel baseball team prepare for THEIR season.  On Saturday morning at the Monroe Athletic Complex, under the supervision of head coach Luis Melendez and other Monroe coaches, a dozen Mustangs worked with the Thunder players on hitting, infielding, outfielding, base running, and pitching.

"We're offering the kids an opportunity to spend some time with our college kids, get some instruction, and have a good time," said Coach Melendez.   "We want to give back to the community.  New Rochelle has been great to us and our program and this is about community service and giving back to the community."
"Monroe did it last year and it was hit and we've had nothing but parent requests for it on an ongoing basis," said Anthony Falisi, Director of New Rochelle Thunder Sports.  "The coaches are outstanding.  They're teaching the kids the fundamentals in a two or three-hour window.  No one else is doing this."
There also was value in the activity for the Mustangs.
"My guys are definitely enjoying it, it's a change of pace," coach Melendez said.   "They've been working real hard and they're definitely enjoying it right now."
