Lea Plarski Award
2004-2005 NJCAA Lea Plarski Award Presented to Kayla Shaul

The National Junior College Athletic Association was proud to award Kayla Shaul of Daytona Beach Community College (DBCC) (Fla.) as the 2004-2005 Lea Plarski Award Winner.

A business and marketing major, Shaul maintained a 3.41 grade point average while taking part in numerous volunteer and leadership activities. She was involved with several organizations, including raising money for Habitat for Humanity, organizing a Red Cross Donor Blood Drive on campus and helping DBCC with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. She also volunteered at a clinic for high school golfers, offering physical and psychological encouragement with their swing, their daily life and their schoolwork. Shaul, as part of the Daytona Beach Community College athletic department, organized a community service project for all the athletes to help raise money to donate to the Save The Children Asia Earthquake Fund.

Shaul was also the DBCC Falcon mascot her sophmore year. As the mascot she took part in Step Up Florida, a program encouraging Florida residents to step it up and exercise. She walked, danced and exercised with residents, encouraging them to participate in regular physical activity.

When asked if she would encourage all student-athletes to get involved Shaul said, "I would definitely recommend that everyone get involved. You get to meet wonderful people and you see what they go through. When you see the smile on someone's face after you have helped them in some way it is so rewarding."

A full scholarship member of the women's golf team, Shaul was also member of the Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee and the Daytona Beach Community College Falcon Force, a program that honors academic, athletic, professional and personal accomplishments on the campus community

William Dunne, DBCC Athletic Director, wrote this about Shaul, "As a student-athlete, Kayla has demonstrated numerous valuable personal traits and characteristics that have served her well during her time at DBCC. She understands the importance of setting goals, being well organized, working through challenges and has displayed an ability to stay focused on various tasks and responsibilities."

In addition to her community and extracurricular activities, Shaul was an integral part of the Daytona Beach women's golf team. She was the team MVP and a first-team All-America selection on a team that won the national championship. The 2003-2004 DBCC Student Athlete of the Year, she placed first at the national championship with a four-day total of 314.

Head golf coach Laura Brown says of Shaul, "Kayla is a great all-around student-athlete and the most competitive kid I have ever coached. Her determination and competitive spirit is something all coaches want in a player. She has really improved the physical side of her golf game and when that is coupled with her mental toughness and strong belief she can take her game to the next level. I am extremely proud of her and this could not have happened to a better person."
