Lea Plarski Award
2003-2004 Lea Plarski Award Presented to Theresa Berry

The National Junior College Athletic Association awarded the 2003-2004 to Theresa Berry of Bevill State Community College (Ala.).

As a pre-medicine major, Berry maintained a 3.74 grade point average along with numerous volunteer and leadership activities. On campus, she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Campus Ministries and the Student Government Association. Away from campus, Berry volunteered at the Fayette Medical Center, the Sister-Friends Service Organization and she participated in the American Cancer Society Relay-For-Life Activities.

Camilla J. Benton, Dean of Bevill State, wrote this about Berry, "I believe you will find no other student who better represents sportsmanship, leadership, community and school service, academic excellence and athletic ability than Theresa Berry. She exemplifies the term 'student-athlete' as well as any student who has been a part of this college."

College President, Harold Wade, continued Benton's sentiments. "Theresa is the embodiment of everything that makes community college intercollegiate athletics outstanding. She came to Bevill State from a small town and took advantage of all the resources that were available combined with her natural talent to have an outstanding two years. She is the type of person that you want to have wearing your uniform and representing your school. She is a great leader, a great person, and truly deserving of this award."

In addition to her community and extracurricular activities, Berry was an integral part of the Bevill State volleyball team. In her first year she received the academic award for highest GPA (4.0) and she tied for third all-time with 35 digs in a single match, bringing the two worlds of academics and athletics together. Head Volleyball Coach Sandra J. Holliman says, "When Theresa accepted the athletic scholarship to play volleyball at Bevill State I was excited. Theresa was my freshman academic award leader and her leadership abilities put her as captain of the team her sophomore year. She has been a wonderful example on and off the court in representing Bevill State athletically and academically."

Berry finished her volleyball career at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala.
