Filiberto Rivera Chosen for 2003 David Rowlands Award
The 2003 NJCAA David Rowlands Male Student-Athlete of the Year award was awarded presented to Filiberto Rivera of Southeastern Community College, West Burlington, Iowa. Filiberto Rivera, from San Juan, Puerto Rico is a guard within the basketball program at Southeastern Community College. Southeastern Community College finished the 2002-2003 basketball season with a 37-1 record and an NJCAA Division I national championship. During the 2002-2003 basketball season, Rivera averaged 16.2 points per game, 6.7 assists per game and had 90 steals on the year. Demonstrating great durability and leadership, Rivera played over 1,100 minutes during the 2002-2003 campaign. Rivera maintained a 2.923 GPA during his two-year tenure at Southeastern Community College. While receiving offers from many NCAA programs, Rivera continue his education and athletic career at The University of Texas at El Paso where he earned First-Team All-Western Athletic Conference honors his junior and senior seasons. Rivera is currently playing in the National Superior Basketball League and has been a member of the Puerto Rico national team since 2006. 2001-2002 2002-2003
